Anniversary Exhibition

MANIFEST75

The visual arts organisation Jakarte celebrates 75 years of artistic engagement in Jakobstad! In connection with the anniversary, the association invites you to an annual exhibition in the city centre, where contemporary works by local artists take centre stage.

Due to cuts in cultural budgets both locally and nationally, we want to draw inspiration from history and how Jakarte has fought over the decades to make the visual arts visible in Jakobstad. We thematise cultural politics and fighting spirit. MANIFEST75 looks back at the association's long tradition of artistic resistance, and forward to a continued vibrant art scene in Jakobstad.

All members of the association have had the chance to participate with at least one work, and in addition, works by our former artists-in-residence Eli Kaunisvesi, Miina Laine, Aeon Lux and Oleksii Karpovych will also be shown. The exhibition includes works by almost 40 artists.

The opening ceremony will be held on 18 July at 6 pm with a speech by Ingela Bodbacka-Rak and President Alexandra Furubacka. We will also crown a couple of new honorary members. During the vernissage, Johan Sandås performative work installation ‘Work in progress’ will take place.

The exhibition is held at Köpmansgatan 16 and is open every day. Admission is free.

Mon/Tue/Thu/Fri 12-18, Wed 12-20, Sat/Sun 11-15 with the exception of days when we have a programme when times may vary.
